Guest Lecture On Topic “LEAN AND GREEN IN THE WORK PLACE AND AT HOME” on 10th OCT 2015 at Department of MBA& Centre For Research -Seminar Hall

Reference: Lecture notes                                                                            Dated 17th Oct 2015

LECTURE NOTES

On the 10th Oct 2015 I was invited to Cambridge Institute of Technology to deliver a Lecture on “LEAN AND GREEN IN THE WORK PLACE AND AT HOME” The brief points are given below:-

The lecture began with the authors experience being a Production Manager for the first time, his nightmarish experience of all his Customers demanding their products “YESTERDAY”. To ease off the tensions he described his experience in obtaining his son’s Birth Certificate at the Nasik Municipality. This was given in a matter of about 10 minutes. This time without him demanding it “YESTERDAY”

He then went on to say how they did it. This was a trigger to him to perform likewise and deliver to his Customers like the Nasik Municipality Officials did it. Later in his capacity as a Tool Room Manager he implemented what he learned.

In all the Implementation of Lean Projects things began with an advanced version of “A SWATCHH BHARAT” technically called as 5S. He went on to explain what is 5S in a brief manner.

He briefly touched upon the other important tools used in Lean at the Office and explained with examples from his own House, how his wife used to do a Vendor Rating of all her Kirana Stores, and zeroing in on only one Kirana Stores for all her Groceries. How she would order based on actual consumption as is done in a modern day Kanbans in Lean Factories all over the world. In this way her Grocery Inventory was kept small.

He mentioned how wastes in Factories are simply thrown away. If it could be segregated it can be sold as special scrap or even as raw materials to scrap vendors. This even included the modern day Electronic Scrap like old computers and peripherals, paper waste, fused bulbs, cartridges etc. Many Industries also treat their waste water before discharging into water bodies. The sludge so recovered is a good money maker. Rain water harvesting saves a lot of water from the Municipal resources. He then went on to give examples which they at Malleshwaram are segregrating House Hold wastes into wet waste and dry waste. The wet waste (Kitchen Waste) is handed over to the Municipality for converting into Manure, while the dry waste is further segregrated into paper, plastic, metal and misc waste and sold to specialist scrap dealers. Further all house hold electronic wastes are sold to specialist Electronic Scrap dealer who processes these scrap into safe base materials and disposed off.

The lecture ended by 5 videos on various aspects of lean in the factory and home, 5s in the workplace and home, and lastly how a mother never seems to complete her house work, with a toddler around in the house.
